NEWS FROM THE TOWN ASSESSOR'S OFFICE

STAR Program information:

In the year that an owner turns 65, they should apply for the Enhanced Star by March 1st of that year. At least one of the owners must be 65 years old to be eligible. The maximum income allowed is $73,000 for the 2009 tax year which will have bearing on the School tax bill issued in September, 2009. There will be future COLA increases each year. Please check with our office for the current amount.

The Basic Star will remain the same. A homeowner needs only to apply once and they will continue to receive it each year without having to renew it. There are no income limits for the Basic Star.

The Town of Wheatfield’s taxable status date is March 1st of each year. All applications must be received in our office by that date to be effective for that years tax roll. If an application is received after March 1st, it will be effective the following tax year.

COLD WAR ELIGIBILITY

What does the law mean by the "Cold War?"

The exemption is available to veterans who served on active duty (exclusive of training) for at least one year in the United States armed forces between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991, and who are not currently receiving either the eligible funds or alternative veterans' exemption.

ALTERNATIVE VETERANS ELIGIBILITY

What does the law mean by a "period of war?"

The exemption is available to veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. armed services during:

• the Persian Gulf Conflict (on or after August 2, 1990)
• Vietnam War (February 28, 1961-May 7, 1975)
• Korean War (June 27, 1950-January 31, 1955)
• World War II (December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946)
• World War I (April 6, 1917-November 11, 1918)
• the Mexican Border Period (May 9, 1916-April 5, 1917) or
• the Spanish-American War (April 21, 1898-July 4, 1902)
The dates of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and the Persian Gulf Conflict are prescribed in the State law, while the dates of the other wars are derived from Federal law.

Notice is hereby given that the Assessment Roll for the Town of Wheatfield, in the County of Niagara, for the year 2008, has been completed by the undersigned Assessor and a Certified copy thereof was filed in the office of the Assessor, on the first day of July, 2008, where the same will remain open for public inspection until October 1st, 2008.
